What is Phoenix Pride?
Phoenix Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee Inc. (less formally known as “Phoenix Pride”) is a community nonprofit organized to celebrate and promote the history, courage, diversity, and future prosperity of the metropolitan Phoenix LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender) community. What is the Phoenix Pride Celebration?
The Phoenix Pride Celebration is an annual celebratory and educational event commemorating the “Stonewall Riots” that most acknowledge as the beginning of the modern gay rights movement. (While the riots first occurred in June of 1969, and while many communities across the world annually celebrate Pride celebrations or “Pride” in June, the Phoenix community has adjusted the outdoor events to occur in April which is a month more tolerable to most of its residents and visitors due to the heat) The Celebration (collectively the Pageants, Parade, 2 Day Festival, Pride Run/Walk and Gala) brings the entire local LGBT community together to celebrate openly and proudly with the greater public.
Does Phoenix Pride give back to the LGBT community?
Yes, Phoenix Pride Community Foundation is the charitable arm of our organization. Over the past 3 years Phoenix Pride has given over $100,000.00 back to the metro Phoenix LGBT community and is on track to give away approximately $100,000.00 this fiscal year alone.

What is the history of the Rainbow Flag and what do the colors mean?
The rainbow flag was first used to symbolize gay pride and diversity by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker and the original was hand-dyed. It first flew in the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978. The flag consisted of eight stripes; Baker assigned specific meaning to each of the colors:
· hot pink - sex
· red - life
· orange - healing
· yellow - sunlight
· green - nature
· turquoise - magic
· blue - serenity
· violet - spirit
As of 2006, it currently consists of six colored stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. It is most commonly flown with the red stripe on top, as the colors appear in a natural rainbow. The rainbow flag, sometimes called the freedom flag, has been used as a symbol of gay pride and gay rights since the 1980s.
